Thailand plans to have bullet trains by 2023, which it hopes will offer a faster and safer way to travel in a country known for its high number of traffic deaths.
The first part of this plan is making Bang Sue the main station instead of the 103-year-old Hua Lamphong Station in Bangkok. The second, which will cost $7.4 billion, is connecting three airports by high-speed rail, or HSR.
The trains will run from Don Mueang Airport through Bang Sue, on to Suvarnabhumi Airport, and ending at U-Tapao Airport outside Pattaya.
Because of heavy traffic at Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi, the government plans to move 10% of flights to U-Tapao.The rail will allow travelers to get to Bangkok in under an hour, and as fast as 250 km per hour.At the moment, it takes two hours or more by bus or taxi.
However, not everyone thinks it's a good idea. Some feel it's too expensive and the distances are too short.According to the Bangkok Post, 3,000 houses will be destroyed to make space for the rail lines.
Before the airport line, another high-speed rail line will open in 2023, running from Bang Sue to Khorat in the northeast. This line is supported by Chinese companies hoping to connect to the Chinese city of Kunming. This could open up new options for Thai businesses abroad.
